Greta Thunberg, born January 3, 2003 in Stockholm (Sweden), is a Swedish environmental activist engaged in the fight against global warming. She protests during the summer of 2018 in front of the Swedish Parliament, at the age of 15, against inaction in the face of climate change. In November 2018, she launched the school strike for the climate. The movement spread worldwide after his speech at the 2018 Katowice climate change conference (COP24) in December of the same year.

The Greta effect:

Greta Thunberg has become the spokesperson for a generation concerned with finding answers to the urgency of the climate crisis. Greta with her buzz influenced the youth. Nowadays more and more young people are interested and participate actively for their future.

Youth for Climate France is a movement of young people who mobilize for climate and social justice, the protection of the environment and biodiversity.

Youth for Climate responded to Greta Thunberg's calls for a school climate strike at the start of 2019. The movement has since established itself as the French group of “Fridays for Future”.

Youth for Climate France represents this global movement of young people, and relays, helps, participates in the structuring of an international movement of middle and high school students and students. This movement takes different names around the planet (Fridays for Future, School Strike for Climate or ClimateStrike), but we are all associated with common values and demands, endorsed in the Lausanne Charter.

Heads of State also recognize the Greta Thunberg phenomenon and take it seriously: she is received by the Pope and Barack Obama; she speaks at the French National Assembly and at the Davos Forum.

In 2019 hundreds of English scientists published open letters to confirm the urgency of action and to publicly support the school strikes for the climate. A few days later, more than 260 Swiss, French and Belgian researchers in turn published an open letter calling for "encouraging this mobilization of young people". That year, the girl was named personality of the year 2019 by the American weekly Time under the title "The power of youth".

On the verge of burnout, the Swede granted herself a truce two years ago. She returns on the occasion of the release of the "Grand Livre du climat", in which she convenes a cast of stars. With the hope of passing the baton.

The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) means the conference of all parties (or states) signatories to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. This convention (UNFCCC), adopted in 1992, recognizes the existence of climate change and aims to stabilize the rate of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by proposing solutions within the framework of international cooperation.

It is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate that is at the origin of the Conference of the Parties. For example, since 1995, signatory states meet once a year in another city for two weeks of climate-related discussions and negotiations. (see the bottom of this article for the main dates of the COPs)

The challenge is to find solutions to curb global warming and to follow up on the agreements put in place.

The participants are the Heads of State and Government of all the signatory States of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, regional or local representatives. The conference also welcomes non-state actors who have observer status, such as those from the private sector: representatives of finance, companies, and investors. Members of civil society and NGOs can also attend the debates as observers. On the other hand, only the States take part in the negotiations.

COP 26 was a disappointment, so COP 27 is highly anticipated.

COP 27 aims to reduce global co2 emissions by 45% by 2030. COP 27 takes place from November 6 to 18, 2022 in Sharm el-Sheykh in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. It is organized this year on the African continent by the Egyptian government. As its name suggests, the COP is meeting for the 27th time.

The year 2021 was marked by many meteorological phenomena such as the mega-fires in Amazonia, California…. then followed the year 2022, the drought in Mahgreb as well as in Europe, the deforestation which does not stop in the Amazon. As you can see it doesn't get better as it goes along but the situation is becoming more and more problematic.

In view of the current situation which continues to deteriorate, civil societies expect a lot from COP 27. They expect a strong commitment from the United States because for the moment their commitments do not make it possible to limit global warming. planet at 1.5°C.

Especially since human activity increases their emissions into the atmosphere, which does not improve the situation.

As we have pointed out before, the situation is only deteriorating. Indeed, six planetary boundaries have already been crossed.

In 2009, three frontiers were exceeded: that of climate change, the limit of the erosion of biodiversity as well as the global disturbances of the cycles of nitrogen and phosphorus.

In 2015, one more is added. Here, it is the limit on land use change, where cultivated land must remain less than 15% of the available land area.

In 2022, two other limits are crossed. The limit on chemical pollution (concerning plastic), and the limit on the use of fresh water.

We only have to hope that COP 27 manages to reach an agreement in order to improve the situation.
